Through study and continual personal development I have learned essential skills and ultimately, that, listening and talking to people is the essence of Psychotherapy, offering emotional support to those with problems that are too heavy for them to bear alone, their anxieties are often overwhelming and a great burden to them. I have learned to assist and understand individuals and help resolve their situations, with compassion, understanding and guidance, these are the qualities of a Professional therapist and what you should expect. The psychotherapeutic situation is extremely intricate, it is a complex interaction between two imperfectly known variables, the client and the therapist.

 

Psychotherapy is, by its very nature, concerned with the basic themes of human life, problems related to love and hate, birth and death, sexuality and power, are all relevant, the vast complexities of the emotions, which stir and sway the hearts of men and women, are the daily concern of the psychotherapist.

 

By concentrating on Humanistic Psychotherapy and attentiveness to the process of change, assertiveness training, conjunctive therapy, psychoneurosis, chemical influences, electicism, redistribution of energy, positivity, integration, guidance in goal setting, counselling and self acceptance, I can help the client through the psychotherapeutic process which is the careful insertion of ideas that motivate the client to activity. It is these ideas which prompt the client to take action and instigate change. It is these same ideas, which cause the client to shake off the past and look to the future with a new and positive outlook.

 

My studies have also included social anthropology and sociocultural change and development including economic anthropology, sex roles, leadership and power, kinship, religion and ritual.

 

Psychology is the study of the human mind and behaviour, through my learning I have gained a comprehensive knowledge of the major areas of contemporary psychology, with an emphasis on the causes and development of behaviour from childhood through the life course, and of the ways, people interact with and influence each other. Training in the scientific basis of psychology, and in the ways psychology can be applied in professional settings; have featured heavily in my learning.

 

Classical and operant conditioning, behavioural programming, philosophical issues, experimental and applied analysis of behaviour. Research procedures including experimental methods, inferential statistics and computing techniques relevant to quantitative methods in the behavioural sciences. The role of psychological theory and its application to both real world and theoretical debates, encompassing relationships between human development, the individual, and the social and cultural context.

 

Theoretical and practical aspects of care concerned with the individual's psychological domain of self. Examining the rapidly expanding discipline of health psychology, with emphasis placed on therapist-client communication as a means of highlighting the central role of interpersonal skills in professional interactions generally and in adherence, pain, attitude change, informational exchange and emotional support. The development social interaction, including: physical development, self, others and society.

 

Issues in personality and social behaviour including: the definition and examination of the roots of social psychology; the application of the main theories of social psychology; issues in social cognition, person perception and the understanding of self and others; the development of prejudice and social influence; human behaviour in groups; the development and manifestation of aggression; altruistic behaviour and issues relating to the social psychology of gender differences.

 

Core areas of cognitive psychology - memory, attention, thinking and language - with emphasis on the empirical basis of knowledge in the area, on links with other areas of psychology and on everyday applications. Major theoretical approaches in contemporary social psychology, including social attitudes and the application of social psychology to important social issues.

 

The understanding of the biological underpinnings of behaviour introduced in Psychobiology in particular, the important psychobiological influences in the production of everyday behaviours and psychiatric disorders.  The origins of individual differences in major psychological attitudes, including cognitive abilities, personality and psychopathology.

 

Advanced research methods and project design developing an independent research project and all stages of the research process from problem formulation to report writing. Studying Intergroup Relations focusing on a theoretically based approach to understanding intergroup conflict. In addition, reviewing a number of psychological techniques, that have been shown to improve intergroup relations.

The human memory on Cognitive Psychology into the realm of everyday, social behaviour examining topics such as autobiographical memory, person identification, eyewitness testimony and oral tradition. With the emphasis on the empirical basis of knowledge in these areas, and on the evaluation of applied issues in everyday human memory.

 

The nature and causes of psychological disorder, the assessment and treatment of mental illness, the involvement of social factors and processes in mental illness, community mental health, and the problems of the mentally ill in the community.

 

The theory and practice of occupational psychology, considering the role of women in work; selection, focusing on the selection interview; work motivation; stress management; industrial relations and work motivation.

 

The fundamentals of psychoanalysis from the standpoint of the relations between the individual and society. Examining the scientific standing of psychoanalysis; considering selected areas of applied psychoanalysis - the psychoanalytic study of the child, psychotherapy, religion; and the uses made of psychoanalysis by major traditions in the psychological and social sciences. The theories and concepts, which are brought to bear on trying to understand a single area, exploring how a diversity of approaches can create a synthesis in our understanding of the development of human social behaviour. Core themes explored include the development of gender, aggression and educational competence.

 

Topics in Behaviour Analysis, with emphasis given to the extension of the principles of behaviour analysis in areas of language and human cognition and providing a solid grounding in methodological aspects of applied behaviour analysis, as well as key areas of application to human behavioural problems. Core themes exploring synthesis include school achievement, sexual health and globalisation. 

 

It is through academic study and continual personal development I have learned to utilize these essential skills and ultimately, apply them, in a productive approach, that includes listening and talking to people, offering crucial emotional support to those who struggle with psychological burdens and anxieties that are often overwhelming.
